Is There a Link Between Menopause and Anxiety?

Menopause and anxietyDuring menopause your body’s hormone levels can shift dramatically causing all sorts of symptoms.  But is anxiety one of them?  Truth is that menopause and anxiety often come hand-in-hand, but how are they linked and what can you do about it?

Menopause and anxiety related to menopause come together not because of a decreased level of estrogen, as you might think, but because of hot flashes.  Actually in many causes hot flashes are the first sign of an anxiety attack.  Menopause can cause hot flashes, and for some people the hot flash can spark anxiety.

Of course this is basically a psychological cause.  If you’ve had any experience with anxiety or panic before you know that most doctors will tell you that the problem is all “in your head.”  By simply changing your thinking (or stuffing anti-depressants down your throat) you can better manage anxiety.

Okay, so you probably picked up on the fact that I’m not a big fan of medication for anxiety.  Anti-depressants can definitely make it easier to go through menopause and anxiety can be reduced this way, but you need to realize that the pills aren’t the real solution.

Medication will only reduce the volume of your feelings of anxiety, so to speak.  It won’t actually cure it, and as soon as you stop medication, you’ll be right back where you started.  If you’re fine with that, then you don’t need to read any further, but if you want real lasting change and real control over the problem you need to address the root cause of the problem.

By reducing your overall levels of stress and “what if” thinking, you can lower your anxiety levels to a point where the next hot flash (or any other symptom) won’t cause you to have a panic attack.

Here are some things you can do:

Yoga – This is a great way to relax and get more in touch with your body.  Not only is yoga a great physical exercise, but it also helps you work out frustrations and stress in a   healthy way, which will definitely help you keep menopause and anxiety under control.

Meditation – Meditation is an excellent way to calm yourself because you can do it just about anywhere.  It’s a great way to disconnect from the stressful things in your life for a little while and just give yourself a moment of quiet.

Simply Having Fun
– I know that life is stressful.  You probably have to juggle career, family, and personal life.  It can be challenging to find any time to enjoy yourself.  But taking a little time now and then to simply do something you like for the sheer pleasure of it can really help you deal with menopause and anxiety much better.

So the real answer to relieving the symptoms of menopause and anxiety is to learn to lower the amounts of stress you experience on a daily basis.  Start making time for yourself and learn to relax and stop taking things too seriously.
