Crash! After that gut wrenching crunch of metal and the smelling burning tires, I pulled my car over and got out. My legs were shaking and my voice was wavering. Fortunately, I was physically okay, but I left the accident with a phobia of driving.
For a lot of people driving is a normal everyday part of life. We drive to work and drive visit friends. Heck, we even drive to the drugstore just to get something as simple as a bottle of aspirin. If you have a phobia of driving, what can you do? How can you overcome it to fully function in our society?

Now a phobia of driving is actually fairly common. The problem is that most people are actually too embarrassed to admit that they have one. After my car accident I was actually very apprehensive about leaving the house to run even the most simple of errands. Sometimes I would even go out of my way and walk just so that I wouldn’t have to get behind the wheel.
It’s a horrible feeling. If you live in the suburbs or anywhere else where you pretty much need a car to survive, it can feel like your world is shrinking all around you.
First of all, realize that it isn’t unreasonable to have a phobia of driving. When you think about it, it really makes sense. You’re trapped in a 2000 pound metal box traveling 60 miles per hour down the freeway with other 2000 pound metal boxes whizzing by you just as fast. Now if that’s not a high-stress situation, I don’t know what is.
But before we can break down a phobia of driving we first need to understand what the actual cause is.
Maybe you’re afraid of getting stuck in rush hour traffic and being unable to escape should something bad happen.
Maybe you’re anxious because one miscalculation could result in a horrible car wreck.
Maybe all the confusing networks of one-way streets, yield signs, traffic lights, and speed limits will overwhelm you and you’ll make a wrong turn somewhere.
There are lots of things that can result in a phobia of driving and it’s important to realize that there really isn’t a one-size-fits-all treatment for it. You need to understand exactly what the root cause is. So, if you don’t already know, take the time to think it over.
Since actually driving probably is out of the question, how can you get over a phobia of driving? Once you know what the root cause is, try to think of other ways to challenge it.
For example, if you are terrified of getting overwhelmed by all the traffic rules, try to find a way to make rules into a fun game. Think of it more like cooking something by following a recipe. Each step in the recipe is like a rule. Set the temperature of the oven, measure out the ingredients, prepare them, and add them together.
You don’t have to let a fear of driving rule your life. It may seem like your life is getting smaller and smaller, but realize that all it really takes is a simple shift in your thinking to start to change the way you feel about driving a car.
