Personally, I used to get quite anxious around people I didn’t know very well, so I developed my own personal social anxiety treatments to slowly push myself out of my comfort zone. I remember, I made a goal once to simply say “hello” to 100 strangers in a week. I kept small note card in my wallet and every time I greeted someone while walking down the street or while riding on the bus, I would tick off one mark.
At the end of one week, I actually did talk to 100 people, and some wonderful things came out of it. I had some fun conversations, I ended up sweet-talking a barrista into giving me a free cup of coffee, and I even ended up getting a date out of it. The point though, is to go in without any expectations. You will succeed if you say nothing more than “hello” to 100 people. If they are grumpy and don’t respond, that is completely their own issue.
Personally, I’ve never used medications or professional therapy as forms of social anxiety treatments, but I do know others who have, and they’ve seen the benefits of them in their own lives.
There are many different ways that you can begin to improve your social anxiety through treatments or personal assignments that you give yourself. The bottom line though is to try to build up an understanding that other people’s beliefs and expectations are out of your control. As long as you show improvement in yourself, then that is ultimately what matters.
