The Key to Stop Obsessive Thoughts

Firstly, disturbing or obsessive thoughts are normal. People experience them all the time. It’s only natural. The only difference is that most people simply don’t give them any credit. Have you ever been at the top of a very tall building and looked down? Most people that do this will at least for a moment ask themselves “What would I do if I fell?” This is completely normal.

What isn’t normal is latching onto this thought and obsessing over it. The reason that people get stuck on a thought or end up feeling trapped by an obsessive ritual is because they are caught up in an anxious cycle.
When you have high levels of anxiety, your mind is constantly in fight-or-flight mode. Believe it or not, given your elevated levels of anxiety, these thoughts are actually quite natural. One of the biggest things that we do in fight-or-flight is assess the risks in our surrounding environment. Suddenly these common, everyday thoughts that we normally just don’t pay much attention to seem to jump out and scream at us.
So we end up worrying that we might end up accidentally hurting people as we pass them on the street or we end up check to make sure that an envelope is sealed several times before we send it out.
We get caught in these obsessive thinking loops, repeating the same thoughts and rituals until something we view as more pressing seems to arise.
So, the way to stop obsessive thoughts is to deal with the underlying anxiety that is causing them in the first place. How do you do this? Here are two tips:
First, you can stop obsessive thoughts by confronting them. If for example, you are worried about touch doorknobs in public because you might pick up germs and get an infection, make the effort to actively go out and open doors without washing your hands afterwards. Prove to yourself that there is no real risk in doing so and you can start to end the obsessive thought.
Second, give someone else responsibility. Perhaps you are worried that you may accidentally leave the oven on when you leave your home. It can help to stop obsessive thoughts by trusting your spouse or a friend to make sure that it is switched off.
But as I stated before, the best way is to deal with the underlying anxiety levels. Once you do this, you stop obsessive thoughts completely naturally and automatically instead of having to manage all kinds of tiny rituals and compulsions.
