Sleep and Anxiety – 4 Tips for a Good Night’s Rest

Sleep and AnxietyWhat keeps you up at night?  If you’re like most people these days it’s stress or anxiety.  One of the most important things you can do to make sure you stay healthy and energized is to get enough sleep and anxiety is one of the biggest things that keeps people from sleeping well at night.

What can you do then to reduce the amount of stress and anxiety you feel so you can finally get a good nights rest?  Here are a few effective ways to relax:

Find Peace of Mind for Relaxing Sleep

First, exercise! It should be any surprise that working out till you’re exhausted is a great way to make yourself sleep at night.  Exercise benefits both your sleep and anxiety.  You can work out those nerves and get rid of your anxious thoughts by jogging, lifting weights, or doing any other kind of exercise.  Plus, the physical exertion will also ensure that you sleep soundly at night.  Oftentimes, the best exercise is the one that you enjoy the most.  If you love playing soccer you can join a community soccer team, or if you like hiking go out trekking with some friends in nature.

Second, learn to relax. Meditation is a great way to calm the mind, especially when it is done before going to bed.  You don’t need to shave your head and become a Buddhist monk to meditate.  All you really need to do is find about ten or twenty minutes of quiet.  Sit down in a comfortable chair and just close your eyes and pay attention to your breathing.  Whenever a thought or a worry crosses your mind, simply bring your attention back to your breathing.  Meditation helps with sleep and anxiety because it gives you a break from that endless to-do list and responsibilities.

Third, find something to laugh about.
Did you know that when you smile or laugh, the flow of blood to your brain increases and you actually get more endorphins (chemicals that make you feel good).  This does wonders for reducing stress and helping with sleep and anxiety levels.  Sure, take your work seriously, but cut loose and have some fun and laughs every now and then.

Fourth, do something. Tossing and turning in bed all night with a hundred worries floating through your head isn’t going to help you.  If all else fails, get up and do something.  Even just taking the first small action to defuse your anxieties can be enough to ease your mind.  For example if you’re having trouble sleeping because you’ve been laid off and you’re worried about money, then get up and apply for one job opening that you see online or work on improving your resume.  This helps you feel like you started the process of solving your problem and it can put an end to anxious thinking.

So, you see that sleep and anxiety are closely related.  By managing your anxiety levels you can vastly improve the quality and amount of sleep that you get on a nightly basis.  Take the steps you need to cut back on your stress levels and you find that those sleepless nights will be something of the past.
